Saturday, March 20, 2010, Myrtle Beach – From hummus to Hunan and sandwiches to Sincronizada, I picked the brains and taste buds of area vegetarians to come up with a list of Top 10 Vegetarian Restaurants in the Myrtle Beach area.
7611 N. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, (843) 448-0011
The front of the business is a thoroughly stocked health food store, but at the rear is a cute little restaurant serving organic sandwiches, soups, salads and smoothies. Everything here is exceedingly fresh, healthy and beautifully presented. There's plenty of outdoor seating in a covered area.
eNoodles & Co.
400 20th Ave. S. (843) 916-8808
110 U.S. 17 S., North Myrtle Beach, (843) 663-1628
Just about any Asian dish (and they have Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese and more) on the menu can be prepared without meat, and they also have specialties such as Fried Tofu and Vegetable Tempura.
Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant
3060 Howard Ave. in The Market Common, Myrtle Beach, (843) 839-0249
In addition to great beers (all vegetarian, every single one of 'em!) good old GB has incredible Garlic Fries, Gorgonzola Pear Salad, Hummus and Goat Cheese Salad over warm flatbread, Veggie Pizza, and during the weekend brunches Veggie Omelet and Veggie Scrambler.
Habibi’s Café & Market
3310 Waccamaw Blvd., next to Bob Evans, off U.S. 501, Myrtle Beach, (843) 236-0150
That haven of hummus, Habibi’s Café, also has Baba Ganough and Taboule Salad, plus Walnut and Pistachio Baklava.
La Hacienda Mexican Restaurant
5711 Dick Pond Rd., Myrtle Beach (Socastee by the Food Lion), (843) 650-3588
2132 Oak Heart Rd., Myrtle Beach (Carolina Forest by where the Piggly Wiggly used to be), (843) 903-3399
I am not normally a Potato Burrito kind of gal, but I tried one at La Hacienda after a vegetarian friend recommended it, and it's not bad at all! You can get any of La Hacienda's Combination Dinners in a vegetarian version, and if that's too complicated for you then there is a special list of a dozen vegetarian dishes. A few include Chile Poblano, Bean Burrito, Cheese Enchilada, Spinach Quesadilla, and the Sincronizada, which is a grilled tortilla sandwich stuffed with mushrooms, spinach and potato.
1760 Pine Island Rd., Myrtle Beach, (843) 286-1400
10736 Kings Rd., Myrtle Beach, (843) 286-0300
1000 S. Commons Dr., Surfside Beach, (843) 286-2222
McAlister's has a lot for non-carnivores like Nachos with Cheese Sauce, Vegetarian Chili, Grilled Sicilian Cheese Sandwich with tomatoes, Veggie Sandwich on Pita, and the Veggie Spud stuffed with red onions, bell peppers, diced tomatoes, black olives and mozzarella.
1571 21st Ave. N., Myrtle Beach, (843) 444-1122
Mellow Mushroom has a lot to love, including Vegetarian Tortilla Soup, Vegan Tempeh Sandwich, Bruschetta, Hummus and the House Calzone with tomatoes, mozzarella, spinach and mushrooms. Of course you can also customize a vegetarian pizza.
2004 U.S. 17 S., North Myrtle Beach, (843) 427-4720
The eclectic menu includes a handful of great gourmet vegetarian choices such as Veggie Sandwich with grilled eggplant, squash, mushrooms, onions, fresh tomatoes, cheese and Cajun mayonnaise; Apple Pecan Salad with candied nuts and apple vinaigrette; and Eggplant Flatbread.
Redi-et Ethiopian Cuisine
746 Main Street, Myrtle Beach, (843) 238-2879
If you've never experienced the pleasure of Ethiopian cuisine, here are the most important parts for vegetarians. While there is meat in some dishes, there are also many vegetarian choices like including Kik Kei Wat (green split peas cooked with onions, garlic, and ginger root, seasoned with red chili pepper powder and spices) and Gomen (fresh collard greens cooked with onions, garlic, ginger root and a blend of herbs and spices). This food is placed on a large platter topped with Injera, which is a flat bread with the spongy consistency of a thick crepe. No silverware is offered; you tear off a piece of Injera and use it to scoop up the food.
Quigley's Pint and Plate
257 Willbrook Blvd., Pawleys Island, (843) 237-7010
While I think Josh Quigley's small batch beers are fine vegetarian dishes (hooray for hops!), he also has non-meat items on the food menu, like big Soft Pretzels;, Fried Pickles; Nachos; Mingo Salad with grilled pear, gorgonzola, spicy pecans, red onions and roasted red peppers; Veggie Sandwich with spinach, tomato, red onion, Swiss cheese and red curry aioli; and a much-celebrated Vegan Burger made with mushrooms, black-eyed peas, wild rice and more.
Who decides the lists? Becky Billingsley: a local food and restaurant journalist who has been covering the Myrtle Beach area restaurant beat for local, regional and national publications for 15 years.
