Gilligan's, a seafood restaurant in Pawleys Island that closed on Sunday, was known for its fresh local shrimp.

Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, Pawleys Island - Gilligan's, a seafood restaurant based near Charleston that opened a Pawleys Island location in 2009, has closed its Grand Strand location.

The restaurant, which had its own building constructed at 13707 Ocean Highway in Pawleys Island, had its last day of business on Feb. 5, according to a corporate spokesperson.

The other seven South Carolina Gilligan's restaurants remain open.

As for the name, the menu says it has nothing to do with the old castaways television show many of us watched after school in the 1970s. According to its Web site, "Gilligan’s Restaurant is the twenty-first century metamorphosis of the original old Gilligan’s Oyster Factory, founded by John C. Rutledge, before the turn of the century in 1891.” That old Gilligan’s was in Charleston; today the Gilligan’s corporate headquarters is on Johns Island.
