Specializing in fresh roast pork By Becky Billingsley Friday, March 12, 2010, Myrtle Beach – Visitors staying in hotels around 3rd Avenue South have an excellent new dining option since Frankie Basile came to town.
The chef recently moved to Myrtle Beach from New York where he says he doubled up and finished a four-year program at the New York Restaurant School in two years. He majored in pastry arts and restaurant management, and his previous culinary experience includes cooking in the World Trade Center, at the Eastchester Fish Gourmet restaurant in Scarsdale and extensive catering work.To fulfill a yearning to escape the bustle of New York, now he has Sandwiches by Frankie inside Queen’s Deli at 311 3rd Ave. S. While Basile does offer an extensive list of sandwiches, he also has excellent house-made lasagna stuffed full of sausage and cheeses; pizzas whole or by the slice; salads including Chef Salad and Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad; and Calzones and Strombolis made with seasoned pizza crust. Roast beef and roast pork are both cook in-house, as are the meatballs.
But back to those sandwiches – there are cold, specialty cold, specialty hot choices and wraps, and side deli salads are tuna salad, macaroni salad, cole slaw, potato salad, egg salad and chicken salad. The deli salads can also be purchased by the pound for $6-$8.75.
Cold sandwiches can come on rolls, pumpernickel, rye, whole wheat or white, and fillings include ham, turkey, roast beef, salami, bologna and BLT, plus a choice of Swiss, pepper jack, Cheddar, Muenster, mozzarella, American and provolone cheeses. They’re $5 each.
Special cold sandwiches are $8, or $9.50 for the hero version which includes a canned soda or chips and a choice of salad. A few choices include:
Frankie’s Combo – Roast pork or roast beef with pepper jack cheese, hot and sweet peppers, lettuce and tomato.
The Daddy – Capicolla, mortadella, fresh mozzarella, hot or sweet peppers, lettuce, tomato, oil and vinegar and Italian seasonings.
3rd Ave – Turkey, roast beef, Swiss cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, sliced onion, horseradish sauce.
No Meat Required – Sliced cucumber, roasted red peppers, shredded carrots, sweet onions, lettuce, bruschetta, mozzarella, Italian dressing.
Egg Salad – Muenster cheese, bacon, lettuce, shredded carrots, black pepper.Specialty Hot Sandwiches are $8 or $9.50, and the bigger version comes with soda or chips and a choice of salad. A few on the menu are:

The Boulevard – Pastrami, corned beef, Swiss cheese, Russian dressing on pumpernickel.
Frankie’s Inferno – Grilled chicken, provolone, onions, hot peppers, “our famous hot sauce.”
The Bronx Bomber – Hot roast beef, melted American cheese, onions, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise.
The Philly – Chicken or shaved steak with white American cheese, fried peppers and mushrooms.
The Corner Pork Sandwich – Roast pork, onions, fried peppers, melted Provolone.
Wraps are $6.75 and the wrapper can be plain, wheat or spinach. A few choices are:
Coastal Carolina – Chicken cutlet, pepperoni, provolone, lettuce, tomato, oil and vinegar.
The Little Lady – Turkey muenster, bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo.
The Pelican – Turkey, hot or sweet peppers, Monterey Jack cheese, oil and vinegar.
Gyro – Sliced lamb or chicken, lettuce, tomato, onions and Tzatziki sauce.
Sandwiches by Frankie has a handful of four-top tables for in-house dining, and the little restaurant is inside a convenience store. It’s open daily starting at 10 a.m., and the number is (843) 626-1444. |
